Countable Noun and Uncountable Noun

Countable nouns are the names of separate objects, people, idea etc, which can be counted.

Uncountable nouns are the names of materials, liquids, abstract qualities, collections and others things which we see as masses without clear boundaries, and not as separate objects.


Countable Noun Uncountable Noun
1. Two type 1. singular and 2. Plural 1. Generally Singular
2. add a/an or one before singular countable noun 2. not a/an use before uncountable noun
3. journey/trip is a countable noun as it indicates one particular movement from one place to another.
we had a very good trip/journey.
3. Travel is uncountable noun
They spend a lot of money on travel.
1. when use material name to refers to something made of the materials it is treated as countable noun.
I'm going out to buy a paper. (paper indicates newspaper)
2. Nouns for materials, liquids, etc can be used countable when they are used to talk about different types.
3. when we talk about ordering drink liquids materials it is used as countable noun.

Two coffees and an orange juice please.
4. Materials are uncountable noun. (ex. Paper, glass, gold, etc)
I'd like some typing paper.
5. Things that come in larger grains are usually Countable Noun. (pea, grape, bean, vegetable, pebble) 5. Things that come in small grains are usually Uncountable Noun. (salt, rice, fruit, sugar, corn, wheat, gravel)

7. Abstract nouns used as countable noun for indicating particular meaning.
He had a hard life.
My mother's parents lived interesting lives. (life treated as countable noun. lives is plural of life)

7. Abstract nouns are generally Uncountable noun for indicating general meaning (Hope, charity, love, kindness etc)
Life is complicated.

8. Minor ailments are countable noun (cold, headache, score throat etc) 8. The names of illnesses are usually singular uncountable noun including those ending with -s (measles, mumps etc)
